What a growth loop is
A funnel takes input at the top, loses most of it, and outputs a customer at the bottom. To get another customer you pay for another input. A loop takes the output, a customer, and turns it into the next input. The framework comes from Reforge and has been the default model for consumer growth teams since about 2018.
For apps the loop is concrete. Every install lifts your rank, which brings more installs. Every review tells you what to put in the listing, which converts better. Every paying user funds an ad that brings the next user. None of these need a new input from you once they run. What they need is someone, or something, that carries the signal from one surface to the next every day. That used to be a growth team. It is now an agent.
The organic loop
Search on the stores and the web is one part. Short form content, comments and reviews are the rest. The organic loop runs at $0, and it is where most apps get their first thousand users. Its parts: keywords per country, a listing that carries them and reads clearly to App Store Tags and Ask Play, a hook a day drafted from reviews and cut for TikTok search, every comment and review answered, and web pages that rank for the same terms and get cited by answer engines.
The 2026 stores strengthen this loop. Indexed screenshot captions give you a keyword slot that also converts. Custom product pages appear in organic search. Google's AI review summary turns your replies into store copy. And TikTok search growth of around 40 percent a year means a hook that carries the search phrase gets found, not only scrolled past.
Run the organic loop for [app] with no budget. Daily: one hook from our reviews with a TikTok search phrase in it, every review and comment answered, a log of what people asked. Every 14 days: one listing change from the keyword plan, measured against the category benchmark. Every Monday: impressions, downloads, trials, day 7 retention per country, and which review became a listing change or a post this week. Spend nothing.
The paid loop
Revenue funds ads, ads bring users, their revenue funds more ads. The loop only closes if a user pays back the cost of acquiring them inside a window you can finance, usually 60 days. That is why the paid loop starts from the organic winners: your best keywords become Apple Ads on your own terms, your best hooks become TikTok Spark Ads and Google App Campaign creative, and the bids follow measured trial to paid rather than installs.
Custom product pages linked to keywords mean the page that converts the ad click also converts the organic searcher, and Google's custom store listings show a median 10 percent conversion lift in campaigns. The paid loop in 2026 feeds the organic loop rather than running beside it.
Open the paid loop only when day 30 retention holds above 20 percent and we know our trial to paid rate. Start with Apple Ads on our own top keywords at $20 a day with a custom product page per keyword group. Weekly: raise a campaign by a third while payback stays inside 60 days, hold when it drifts, pause with a reason when it leaves the window. Never exceed the monthly cap I set.
The retention loop
Users who stay are what make the other two loops pay. A cheap install that leaves on day three is a loss, and since both stores now rank on retention, it is a loss of rank as well as money. The retention loop watches day 1, 7 and 30, finds the biggest leak, and fixes it: the onboarding step, the push permission prompt, the win back offer for lapsed trials. Google Play's delayed charging and 60 day recovery window take care of part of involuntary churn on their own, up to 18 percent in Google's numbers, once they are switched on.
Read day 1, 7 and 30 retention per cohort against the category benchmark. Find the largest drop between two days and tell me what happens in the app there. Draft the fix: onboarding, a push prompt after the first win, or a win back message on day seven. Check that delayed charging and the 60 day recovery window are on in Play Console.
How the loops feed each other
A repeated complaint in reviews becomes a screenshot caption, which is indexed, which lifts a keyword, which makes the Apple Ads campaign on that keyword cheaper, which funds a TikTok test of the hook that came from the same complaint, whose comments become the next reviews. The signal crosses four surfaces in one week. The point of an agent is that nobody has to remember to carry it.
Treat every signal as input for every loop. When a complaint repeats, propose the listing fix, the hook and the retention change together. When a hook wins, propose it as a Spark Ad and put its words into the captions. When a keyword's organic rank rises, lower the bid on it. Report the chain, not the parts.
How to start with nothing
Run the organic loop alone for the first months. Ship one listing change every two weeks, post a hook a day, answer everything. Track impressions, downloads, trials and day 7 retention. When day 30 retention holds above 20 percent and you know your trial to paid rate, price a paying user on Apple Ads and start the paid loop at $20 a day. Raise it only while it pays back. The retention loop runs from day one, because it costs nothing and every other loop depends on it.
